All Software Must Be Rewritten: The Rise of AI-Native Languages
Hugging Face co founder Thomas Wolf on AI native software: Why most code will be rewritten and how LLMs are reshaping programming languages dependencies and open source
Thomas Wolf, co-founder of Hugging Face, latest thoughts: In a software world dominated by AI, a fundamental shift is happening at the architectural level. Andrej Karpathy also agrees with this view. It’s very possible that we will end up rewriting most of the software ever written multiple times — at least this is a very interesting moment.
Software supply chain shrinking, return of monolithic architecture
When rewriting code and understanding large, unfamiliar codebases becomes extremely cheap, the incentive to rely on deep dependency trees collapses. Instead of spending countless nights studying unfamiliar codebases, it becomes far easier to simply ask a code agent to write everything from scratch — or to extract and adapt relevant parts from other libraries.
