Clawdbot became extremely popular—seriously viral. In just a few short days since this round of exposure, its GitHub star count has already approached 70,000, truly a case of “taking off on the spot.”
But when AI gets hot, controversies follow. Along with the explosive fame came not just praise, but a series of overwhelming chain reactions.
A Cease-and-Desist Letter Triggers the “Molting”
Yesterday afternoon, Clawdbot officially announced its rename to Moltbot.
The direct trigger for this name change was a lawyer’s letter from AI giant Anthropic. Anthropic accused it of trademark infringement, arguing that “Clawdbot” was too similar in spelling and pronunciation to their own “Claude.” For the developer, Peter Steinberger, this rename was not his original intention but a reluctant move forced by pressure.
He self-deprecatingly posted on X: “Same lobster soul, new shell.” (The same lobster soul, just with a new shell.) He chose the word “Molt” (to shed skin), symbolizing the painful molting process that lobsters must go through to grow.
