How Programmers Survive the AI Era
Why AI won't make programmers obsolete. Learn how engineering thinking turns AI coding tools into stable production systems, not just one-off experiments.
“Oh no, I can’t even understand the questions the AI is asking me. What should I do?”
This is a line that came from a non-programmer while using a Coding Agent for development.
When I saw it, I smiled. Not because he didn’t understand, but because I thought: not understanding the deep professional details is completely normal. You’re not supposed to understand them in the first place.
It’s like an ordinary person who takes a pretty decent photo with a camera, then runs to ask a photographer how it could be improved further—only for the photographer to start talking entirely in jargon, leaving the person unable to follow a single word.
AI has leveled the barrier to writing code, but that doesn’t mean professional expertise has disappeared along with it.
This circles back to the old question: Will AI replace programmers?
My answer is yes. But there’s a premise—it depends on whose hands the AI is in. The AI that can replace programmers still needs to be built by programmers themselves.
