Recently, Microsoft's announced global layoffs appear to have hit software product development teams the hardest.
According to Washington state government documents reviewed by Bloomberg, software engineering is by far the most affected single job category in Microsoft’s home state, accounting for over 40% of the roughly 2,000 layoffs in the state.
Among the laid-off developers are members of the Faster CPython team, which drove most performance improvements in recent Python versions.
Besides software engineers, those responsible for software projects were also heavily impacted. Data shows that product management and technical program management roles in Washington state saw nearly 600 job cuts, about 30% of the total layoffs.
Even Microsoft’s AI director, Gabriela de Queiroz, was let go. According to an insider, the layoffs also targeted some managers and employees assigned to AI projects.
Data indicates that customer-facing roles, such as sales or marketing, were less affected.
